Katav vs NotebookLM
Both use AI on your sources, but they aim at different jobs. NotebookLM is built for research and document Q&A. Katav is built for the rhythm of a semester.
Katav
AI-powered study workspace for students
NotebookLM
by Google
NotebookLM is excellent if you mostly want to upload documents and ask grounded questions — its source-cited answers, video explainers, and full-length audio overviews are unmatched, and it analyzes large PDFs faster. Katav is better if you actually need to capture lectures, organize subjects across a semester, and keep a calendar, to-dos, and AI study plan tied to your classes. We overlap on flashcards, quizzes, and mind maps — those are not the deciding factor.
When Katav fits better
You want a notebook organized by course, subject, and class — not just standalone notebooks
You record lectures and want them transcribed and connected to your notes
You want a calendar, to-dos, and AI study plans linked to your real schedule
You want native mobile support for recording and reviewing on the go
You want a knowledge base that connects concepts across subjects, not isolated notebooks
When NotebookLM fits better
Your main use case is grounded Q&A over large collections of PDFs and articles
You want video explainers generated from your sources — Katav does not offer this yet
You want full-length, multi-voice audio overviews — Katav's podcast is single-voice and capped at 5 minutes on paid plans
You upload heavy PDFs often — NotebookLM analyzes them noticeably faster today
You want it completely free, with no usage limits beyond Google's defaults
You are not a student — you are a researcher, lawyer, journalist, or analyst

Our honest verdict
If your job is to read heavy PDFs and ask the model questions about them — or you want video explainers and full audio overviews on top — use NotebookLM. It is a phenomenal research tool and analyzes documents faster than we do today. If your job is to survive a semester — capture lectures, organize notes by class, and run a calendar, to-dos, and study plan around your real schedule — Katav is the better fit. Many students use both: NotebookLM for deep document research, Katav as the home for daily class work.
